Do you know if he is 100% Barbary?
:icontimgander:
Hi! Good question. I'm not an animal expert, and on the Port Lympne website they refer to them as "Barbary/Atlas Lion". Does that mean they are cross-bred? Or is it that in some people call them Barbary and some call them Atlas? I'd like to know your thoughts...

For info, this was shot on a 300mm f2.8 through a shooting hatch which had been installed for a TV documentary crew to use. I still didn't want to stick my lens in too far though!

I've never heard of Atlas lion. But I know Barbary lions are really rare. I think there are 6 male barbary lions left in America. And we have some, but we don't know how much % Barbary Blood they have. Their manes are a lot darker than this one... So I guess Barbary/Atlas is a cross breed o.O
:icontimgander:
Could be. This has to be a captive-bred one. He had cubs in there too and if I get time I'll dig out the pics and see if there's anything worth posting here.
:iconsafarissanctuary:
yeah barbary lions are extinct in the wild. the only ones alive are in zoos.... too sad =(
i'll try to get some of ours... i hope they will have a dna testing that works soon so we can find out how much % they actually are

Aren't they just. But I think they were trying to figure out if he could pull me through the shooting hatch and eat me

Funny story on this one. The lion came right up to the fence and the keeper said "go ahead and tickle him, he loves it", so I stuck my fingers in (!) and gave him a tickle on the back. At this the lion turned and roared at me and I had to swallow my heart and lungs. The lion's roar makes your guts rattle at close range... don't try this at home, kids

OMG, I'd love to do that though, I like it when the lions roar they make an interesting sound :aww:

That's what your mom said, before I shaved her back! ATHF

Is there some tread left on those tires, or is it just like throwing a hot dog down the hallway? Family Guy
:icontimgander:
Haha! I see what you mean here [link] . You should get a pet lion and enter a owners that look like their pets competition. You'd win (because the judges would be scared you'd set the lion on them!)
